First built in 1902 for ship construction, the 250,000-square-foot “Building 128” may be back at the cutting edge of industry. The enormous structure will host New Lab, a platform and community for technology-focused entrepreneurs. Yesterday, New York City officials, Brooklyn Navy Yard President & CEO David Ehrenberg, and New Lab founders David Belt and Scott Cohen gathered to inaugurate the new space. The scale of the New Lab is large, both in terms of raw numbers and the work being done: 50 companies and 350 workers will share 84,000 square feet of offices, laboratories, and other industrial facilities.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard is slowly being converted from a defunct shipbuilding port into the city’s new commercial food hub with a planned development that will bring in Russ & Daughters, Brooklyn Brewery, Mast Brothers and more. But some pioneers have already begun moving in. First there was Kings County Distillery, which just debuted an outdoor tasting room for its New York state whiskeys in one of the old gatehouses flanking the Navy Yard’s entrance. And now there’s Rooftop Reds, the Brooklyn Grange-style urban winery that recently opened a wine bar on top of Building 275.

A new 1.7 acre public open space on the site of a former Naval Cemetery on the Brooklyn waterfront has opened to the public. The project is designed to create a space that will honor the history of the site and the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and provide public access to a community resource for the first time in 90 years. The new open space reimagines the site as a public place for passive recreation and an immersive experience in native ecology that provides visitors with an escape from the urban environment.

BROOKLYN, NY — NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio isn’t letting the haters dull his excitement over plans for a $2.5 billion streetcar between Brooklyn and Queens. After releasing an initial fact sheet on the 16-mile Brooklyn-Queens Connector (BQX) earlier this month, the mayor followed up Tuesday with a more tangible timetable for his fancy new dream line. (Perhaps to counter skepticism that the streetcar would be more of a tourist trolley than a working man’s commuter train.

An area once known for governmental “Keep Out” signs is becoming a primary driver for jobs in New York—along with new office space, new retail and new residences—as the Brooklyn Navy Yard and its surrounding area on Flushing Avenue, considered one corner of the borough’s burgeoning Tech Triangle with Dumbo and Downtown Brooklyn comprising the others, continue their expansion.

The transformation of the Brooklyn Navy Yard from a once-thriving manufacturing center to 21st-century tech incubator is well underway, with plenty of new amenities—a shuttle service, a Wegmans grocery store, and an enormous food hall among them—planned for the Brooklyn waterfront. And while we've gotten some glimpses at what these forthcoming spaces will look like, a set of renderings uncovered by Brownstoner provides perhaps the most comprehensive overview thus far.

In a major reimagining of the New York City waterfront, Mayor Bill de Blasio is set to propose a streetcar line that would snake along the East River in Brooklyn and Queens, a 16-mile scenic ride that would be his administration’s most ambitious urban engineering project to date. The plan calls for a line that runs above ground on rails embedded in public roadways and flows alongside automobile traffic — a sleeker and nimbler version of San Francisco’s trolleys.

Waterfront property is among the most valuable real estate in the United States —many of us desire marine views or beach access. But for much of our nation’s history, large chunks of such land, often near or within major cities, have been controlled by the U.S. Navy, used to house the shipyards that turned America into a naval superpower. But as needs change, and as some of those naval shipyards come to the end of their lifespans, the question becomes: What should be done with these high-potential industrial properties next?

The area by the Brooklyn Navy Yard can seem forbidding. Hulking warehouses line Flushing Avenue, a wide and busy street that hugs the yard for 16 blocks, while the yard, a massive former military complex turned manufacturing center, is almost totally enclosed by tall fences and walls. But the vibe will be less harsh going forward, as major steps are being taken to reinvent the area, part of the Wallabout neighborhood. Across from the yard, developers are putting the finishing touches on Navy Green, a housing complex being built on the site of a former Navy brig

We are eternally intrigued by the Navy Yard, which was established in 1801 by President John Adams. Some of the nation's finest naval ships were built there, including the USS Ohio, launched in 1820, and the USS Arizona, which was sunk during the Dec. 7, 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The former Naval shipbuilding facility's present incarnation as an industrial park is fascinating, too. Under the management of the nonprofit Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp. (BNYDC), it has become a place where people make oodles of interesting things, from bomb-proof underwear (at Crye Precision) to hit movies and TV shows (at Steiner Studios).
